Cancer in Algeria: current situation and national mobilization

Cancer is today one of the leading public health concerns in Algeria. According to data from the Ministry of Health and the National Cancer Registry, more than 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, with an upward trend linked to population aging, changing lifestyles, and improved detection. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, followed by cervical and colorectal cancer. Among men, lung, colorectal, and prostate cancers are among the most frequently diagnosed. In response, the Algerian Federation of Cancer Patients Associations (FAAPAC) continues its work alongside its 25 member associations spread across the country. Our priorities: - Raising awareness of avoidable risk factors (tobacco, alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, diet); - Encouraging early screening, which greatly improves the chances of recovery; - Supporting patients and their families throughout the care journey; - Carrying patients' voices to institutions to improve access to treatment. FAAPAC reminds everyone that a cancer detected early is, in most cases, a cancer that can be cured. We invite everyone to reach out to their nearest member association for information or support.
